malgré vs. bien que: how to choose
Same job (concede an obstacle, report the outcome anyway) but a completely different grammatical shape: 'malgré' takes a noun, 'bien que' takes a full clause in the subjonctif. Swapping one for the other without changing the surrounding grammar is the single most common mistake in this whole family.
The choices at a glance
| Choose | When to use it | Pattern and example |
|---|---|---|
| malgré | + nom — l'obstacle est un simple groupe nominal, jamais un verbe conjugué. | Malgré la pluie, nous sortons. |
| bien que | + subjonctif — l'obstacle est une proposition entière, concédée. | Bien qu'il pleuve, nous sortons. |

Common mistakes
✗ Malgré il pleut, nous sortons.
✓ Malgré la pluie, nous sortons. / Bien qu'il pleuve, nous sortons.
'malgré' can never sit directly before a conjugated verb — only a noun. Either nominalize the idea (la pluie) or switch the whole construction to 'bien que + subjonctif'.
✗ Malgré mon travail dur, le projet ne semble pas finir bientôt.
✓ Malgré mon travail acharné, le projet ne semble pas près de se terminer. / Malgré tous mes efforts, le projet ne semble pas près de se terminer.
'travail dur' isn't the natural collocation — 'travail acharné' (relentless/hard work) or 'tous mes efforts' both nominalize the idea correctly for malgré + nom. Your instructor confirmed (2026-08-21) both 'malgré + nom' and 'bien que + subjonctif' versions of this sentence are correct — they're just two different structures for the same concession, not competing corrections. Her rule: malgré + nom → never 'que'; when a full clause needs conceding, that's 'bien que + subjonctif' territory instead (see the row on this comparison's other pair, or 'malgré que je travaille dur' below).
✗ Malgré que je travaille dur, le projet ne semble pas se finir.
✓ Bien que je travaille dur, le projet ne semble pas se finir.
For a full clause in careful or exam writing, bien que + subjonctif is the safe choice. Malgré que occurs in common usage but is criticized in sustained style; malgré + noun remains the straightforward alternative.
