bien que vs. même si: how to choose

Both concede something and both gloss as 'although/even if', but the mood is the tell: 'bien que' takes the subjonctif because the conceded clause is presented as merely admitted, not asserted; 'même si' takes the indicatif because it states the conceded fact plainly. This is the one true mood fork inside the concession family, and the single most useful decision rule to memorize.

The decision: Concede a fact but keep it in the subjonctif, slightly more formal/literary feel? → bien que. State the concession as a plain fact (real or an open hypothesis), indicatif? → même si.

The choices at a glance

ChooseWhen to use itPattern and example

'même si' always takes the indicatif, never the subjonctif — 'aies' here is borrowed from the 'bien que' pattern by mistake.
