French expressions & patterns
il faut vs. il faudrait vs. il serait souhaitable de: how to choose
These aren't three synonyms for 'should' - they sit on a directness/register gradient. 'Il faut' asserts the necessity as a fact. 'Il faudrait' softens it into a recommendation via the conditional. 'Il serait souhaitable de' goes further: it frames the action as desirable from an evaluative distance rather than as something you personally insist on - the most formal, most written-register option of the three.
The decision: Blunt, direct necessity? -> il faut. Softened recommendation, still personal? -> il faudrait. Formal, evaluative, written-register distance? -> il serait souhaitable de.
