gérondif (en + participe présent) vs. participe présent (sans en): how to choose

The gérondif is en + participe présent and normally shares its subject with the main verb. A bare participe présent is verbal and invariable; it can often be expanded to qui + verb. An adjectif verbal describes a quality and agrees with the noun. A complement is useful evidence of verbal use, but its absence does not automatically turn a participe présent into an adjective: meaning and syntax decide.

The decision: En + -ant describing a simultaneous action or means by the main subject? → gérondif. Does the -ant form express an action and accept verbal complements or a qui + verb paraphrase? → participe présent, invariable. Does it express a stable quality and behave like an adjective? → adjectif verbal, agreeing with the noun.

The choices at a glance

ChooseWhen to use itPattern and example
gérondif (en + participe présent) 'en' + participe présent — the SAME subject as the main verb does both actions, at the same time, or one is the means/manner of the other. J'ai pu admirer la vue en ouvrant la fenêtre.
participe présent (sans en) No 'en' — describes a NOUN, replacing a relative clause 'qui + verbe conjugué'. Je vois une femme lisant un livre.

Compare the meaning

Il apprend en pratiquant tous les jours.

L'homme pratiquant tous les jours progresse vite.

Les chocolats fondant lentement au soleil m'ont donné envie d'en manger.

J'adore les chocolats fondants.

Common mistakes

✗ Je vois une femme en lisant un livre.

✓ Je vois une femme lisant un livre.

Adding 'en' here is wrong — the participle describes the woman (a noun), not a second action of the sentence's own subject ('je'). 'En lisant' would mean 'I' am reading, which isn't the intended meaning.

✗ J'adore les chocolats fondant.

✓ J'adore les chocolats fondants.

Here fondants names a quality or type of chocolate, so it is an adjective and agrees. Compare les chocolats fondant lentement au soleil: there, fondant expresses the action of melting and is an invariable present participle. The decision comes from meaning and syntax, not from a complement-counting rule.
