French connectors
pourtant vs. cependant vs. néanmoins vs. toutefois: how to choose
Four ways to concede a point and report a result that defies it. All four gloss in English as roughly 'however/yet' — none of them are drop-in interchangeable. Register climbs pourtant (spoken, everyday default) → cependant (written, essay default) → néanmoins/toutefois (both written, but different jobs): néanmoins insists the original conclusion stands despite the concession; toutefois softens the previous claim with a limit rather than fully contradicting it. In careful writing, use clear clause punctuation; a semicolon or full stop before a sentence-opening connector is a reliable pattern, but connector position and punctuation can vary.
