bien que vs. quoique vs. même si vs. alors que: how to choose

These four conjunctions are easiest to learn on one aligned page. Bien que and quoique do the same concessive job with the subjonctif; quoique is the more literary alternative. Même si also introduces a concession (and can introduce an open hypothesis), but it takes the indicatif. Alors que is the semantic outsider: in this use it sets two real facts side by side in opposition and takes the indicatif. The subjonctif after bien que or quoique is required by the construction, even when the conceded fact is known to be true.

The decision: Concede a fact with the default conjunction? → bien que + subjonctif. Want the same construction in a more literary register? → quoique + subjonctif. State the concession directly or introduce an open hypothesis? → même si + indicatif. Compare two parallel facts? → alors que + indicatif.
