alors que vs. bien que: how to choose

Easy to conflate in English (both can gloss as roughly 'although/whereas'), but they do different jobs. 'Alors que' expresses opposition and normally takes the indicatif in this use. 'Bien que' expresses concession and takes the subjonctif, even when the conceded fact is known to be true. They are not interchangeable: swapping one for the other changes both the relationship between the ideas and the required mood.

The decision: Comparing two parallel, equally-real facts, side by side? → alors que + indicatif. Admitting one fact, then making your real point despite it? → bien que + subjonctif.

Common mistakes

✗ Alors qu'il soit fatigué, il continue.

✓ Bien qu'il soit fatigué, il continue. / Il est fatigué, alors que son collègue est en pleine forme.

'alors que' takes the indicatif and compares two facts side by side — it isn't a concession word and never takes the subjonctif. If the sentence is really conceding one fact to make a different point, that's 'bien que + subjonctif'.
