French sentence structure

Après, après avoir or après que?

All three express what comes after something else, but they do not accept the same grammatical shape.

The decision: use après + noun for a thing or time period, après avoir/être + past participle for a completed action with the same subject, and après que + indicative for a full clause.

Après avoir or après être?

Choose the auxiliary exactly as you would in the passé composé. Most verbs use avoir. Verbs and pronominal constructions that take être keep it here too.

Après avoir terminé son travail, Hugo est sorti.

Hugo finished and Hugo went out: same subject.

Après être arrivée à la gare, Lina a appelé son frère.

Arriver takes être; the participle agrees with Lina.

Après que normally takes the indicative

In careful standard French, après que presents the earlier event as completed. That is why it normally takes an indicative tense, not the subjunctive.

Après qu’il a vérifié l’adresse, il a confirmé la réservation.

The verification is presented as a completed fact.

A useful time-span pattern

A time noun can be followed by à + infinitive to describe the activity that filled that period.

Après plusieurs mois passés à préparer le projet, l’équipe était prête.

After several months spent preparing the project…
